‘’This is a remarkable investment, and we are very pleased for the endorsement of the Hammar Mishref project by the shareholders,” said Andrew Wiper, BGC Managing Director. “Our aim is to support the Government of Iraq’s vision to increase production capacity whilst reducing gas flaring in the south of Iraq – turning the associated flared gas into cleaner energy powering people’s lives in Iraq.”

Of the 24 compressor stations that BGC runs, Hammar Mishref is one of the first to have been updated since BGC began operating in 2013. The original Hammar Mishrif compressor station has four 35 mmscf/d-capable compressors. Recently, two more compressors with a combined capacity of 32 mmscf/d were installed, with an anticipated start date of the first quarter of 2023.

“BGC is playing a pivotal role in minimizing gas flaring from licensing round 1 oilfields, our aspiration is to end flaring in the long run from the three fields,” said Wiper.

The new mega project will add 11 additional compressors to the Hammar Mishref compressor station, increasing its compression capacity from 35 mmscf/d to 147 mmscf/d. In addition to enhancing the ability to capture associated gas and further reducing flaring from the Zubair oilfield, the five additional compressors will also boost the stability and dependability of dry gas for use in the production of electricity.

Iraq’s South Gas Company controls 51% of the Basrah Gas Company, followed by Shell with 44% and Mitsubishi with 5% of the company.

“BGC is a lean and robust organization led and operated by skilled Iraqis who are eager to help their country and their communities,” added Wiper.
