We probably don't need to tell you about the resurgence of the ballet flat. Over the past few seasons, the beloved Noughties' shoe has risen in popularity once again and is being worn everywhere, whether in leather, sheer, satin or sequinned. One of our favourite styles to have emerged is a Mary-Jane iteration from Le Monde Beryl, which has been worn by names such as Sofia Richie, Alexa Chung, Kaia Gerber, Jenna Coleman, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Dakota Johnson – and, there are currently lots of pairs marked down in the sales, so now is a great time to invest.
Le Monde Béryl is a London-based brand, established in 2016 by designers Lily Atherton Hanbury and Katya Shyfrin. It originally launched with a modern version of the Venetian gondolier’s slipper, aiming to give consumers a chic option to wear throughout the day and into the night, without having to change into heels. Since then, the brand has created a very chic take on the Mary-Jane ballet flat, which now comes in various leather shades, printed ponyhair, mesh, velvet and studded sequins – and certainly, just like the slipper, also delivers in versatility.
The brand first launched its Mary-Janes in October 2020, but has this year seen sales increase by over 265 per cent, which is no surprise considering how many influential A-listers have snapped them up.
Chung (who has them in more than one colour) has paired hers with jeans, silky slip dresses and summery floral frocks, while Johnson was spotted wearing her Mary-Janes with tailored trousers – and Jenna Coleman styled the silver pair with a shorts suit. Most recently, Richie (who shared an image of herself wearing them this week) teamed a velvet pair with a beautiful Prada nightgown.
While they might be celebrity approved, they come with a pretty affordable price tag, ranging in price from £395 to £455 depending on which style you like, while there are a number of pairs available at around £250 in the pre-Christmas sales.
